BANGALORE: Chaos prevails in the evaluation section of Bangalore University. The semester system is a nightmare, not just for students and teachers, but for the authorities as well, specially with regard to evaluation. This year, undergraduate students will have to wait longer for results. With barely 15 days allotted for completing evaluation, authorities are running helter-skelter to speed it up.
Special officer in charge of UG results, R M Ranganath, told TOI: "We've less than 20 days to evaluate lakhs of answer scripts. It's humanly impossible."
In a semester system, there are practically 90 working days for academic activities which translate to four months. Of this, 25 days are for conducting examinations in commerce and humanities stream, while 18 days are taken away for science practical exams, leaving just a fortnight for evaluation. But teachers have their own problems. "We are summoned by the university when regular classes are on. How can we sacrifice teaching hours for valuation work?" a lecturer asked. "Semester system is good for smaller universities and not for a centralised set-up like BU. In 2003, when the semester system was introduced, the number of affiliated colleges was about 280 which has swelled to over 600 today and is still growing," Ranganath said. Registrar (Evaluation) Radhakrishna Rao Madankar said the university has taken steps to avoid delay in results. "Nodal officers have been appointed to oversee valuation. We will try our best to effectively complete the process at the earliest amidst all odds." "To ensure that sixth-semester and final-year students do not lose a year due to the delay in results announcement, we've decided to focus on these first, before taking up the valuation work for the rest of the semesters, as they will not be affected due to the carry-over system," Ranganath added.
